It's not unusual that I would wake up, roll over to my laptop and casually browse around Facebook. However, today was a bit different. I stumbled across what I had long pushed back in my mind. For a few minutes, I felt ashamed that I had done this. I usually have my mind set and concrete in what I will accomplish. A while back, I had not yet had this mentality and was swaying between majors: Child Development or Engineering. Of course, being me, I chose practicality over passion. Now my mind sways once again.
Many people who are familiar with me would all say that I have a passion for working with young children. (I also have a passion for music, but that's going to be saved for another day.) My "daily" job consists of working with young elementary children and teaching them music. I love what I do. I love the ups and downs of working with young children. The younger elementary school kids are a bit more enthusiastic about what's being taught. They haven't formed too many opinions against what their parents have to say. Minds are still fresh and have a clean slate and are so eager to take in any information presented to them. It's astounding how much a child can learn in such a short time, for me, my students really hit home-base in my heart. Every. Single. One.
The sad truth in our world is that not everyone sees children as the "norm" would. There are a handful of children in this world who are abused. Sometimes not physically, but emotionally and verbally as well. What I stumbled across on Facebook this morning brought me to tears. However, realistically stepping back and thinking about it, there are many cases of children who are beaten to the brink of death...and end up dying on their own. As I sit here and write this blog, I realize how grateful I am that I have each one of my students who are up to this age as it is. Many children don't make it to be able to go to school. Many children don't make it passed their first birthday.
I'm going to cut this blog short and plead with you, if you know of any child abuse occuring, don't hesitate to call the local authorities. Children are so innocent. They're helpless, defenseless, and harmless in the world. Watch this video on Baby Brianna. She was the inspiration for my blog today. I warn you - this video clip is graphic.
